Itaconic acid (IA), also known as methylene butanedioic acid, methylene succinic acid, 3-carboxy-3-butanoic acid, propylene dicarboxylic acid is one of the promising substances within the group of organic acids. It is a white crystalline unsaturated dicarbonic acid with one carboxyl group conjugated to the methylene group. Itaconic acid is also an interesting starting material for biofuel production because it can easily be converted into 3-methyltetrahydrofuran (3-MTHF), a fuel with excellent physical and chemical combustion properties (Geilen et al., 2010).The present review focus on itaconic acid production and its biotechnological perspective.
